How do I get my stereo headphones to last longer?

I had to buy two different years of stereo headphones. Has anyone ever had this happen?: I’ll have a pair of stereo headphones, use them on a regular basis, then suddenly a page off. Both sides left or right will go completely dead. So I will sit with a pair of headphones, where the music, just print a page! What causes this and how can I avoid this?
