Some of the latest headphones available on the market are called noise canceling headphones, such as Bose QuietComfort 15. They utilize technology that decreases both surrounding noises and irritating speaker noise. They can cancel many noises such as loud equipment noises in addition to other types of loud noises. They also cancel out internal noises too. For instance, let’s assume that you want to listen to your portable CD player. If you increase the sound of the headphones too much, you will be able to hear the sound of the CD player in addition to the music from your favorite CD. Noise canceling headphones are able to efficiently cancel out this type of noise so that the only thing you will hear is your music. If this were for business purposes, you wouldn’t miss your important call or you would be able to decipher the information in your business report.
Noise canceling headphones come in two different types, passive and active. In case you are wondering, Bose QuietComfort 15 Noise Cancelling Headphones is from the latter type. Some type of headphones have some sort of natural passive cancellation for noises, this is just how they are made. The cushioning materials, for the over the ear types already make an effective noise blocker to some extent, usually the noises that are at more higher frequencies. True noise canceling passive headphones are circum-aural, specially designed and constructed to maximize noise filtering. This usually means that they are made from heavy duty sound absorbing materials like foam. This also makes them a little heavier than other styles. The disadvantage of these passive models is that not only are they heavy, they also only reduce the amount of decibels only 15-20. Most louder noises, like traffic noise, or a plane engine are still high, in the 75-80 decibel range.
With active noise canceling technologies, these headphones not only do everything that passive models do, but something else as well. They produce their own sound waves that mimic the background noise, but 180 degrees out of phase with the ambient sounds, effectively erasing all intruding sound waves, including those at lower frequencies. This is also known as destructive interference. If you need more technical information on how this works there are an abundance of websites to explain it.
What most people are more concerned with is that it does work, and work well. There are an abundance of different brands of noise canceling headphones on the market, such as QuietComfort 15. some headphones on the market cost hundreds of dollars and whereas other are in the price range where some people if not most could afford. Many people don’t want to spend that kind of money on a pair of headphones, no matter how well they work. This is why you really have to do some research and shop around for the best prices and selection. Online at several of the headphone review sites is a good place to start.
