Sennheiser HD555

Three Reasons to Love the HD555

The Sennheiser HD555 is meant to be a more affordable alternative to the Sennheiser 595. With its great feature set made even more attractive by the below-$200 price tag, the Sennheiser HD555 is a great entry-level headphone. Here are three good reasons to choose the Sennheiser HD555:

1. Excellent Comfort

Full sized headphones have a reputation for being heavy, uncomfortable and even weird looking. While the Sennheiser HD555 is still admittedly way too big to look cool in, despite its sci-fi look, it is very comfortable. Made almost entirely of plastic, the Sennheiser HD555 is a lightweight at 260g, although not the most lightweight headphone for its category.

It is exceptionally comfortable though because the Sennheiser HD555 ear cushions are made of velour and are designed to sit around the ears instead of on top of them. The adjustable headband also contributes to comfort because it allows for a good fit from very small to very big heads. The Sennheiser HD555 headband is also made of flexible material which allows it to be twisted to remove one ear cup while leaving the other on.

2. Great Bass

Audio-wise, the Sennheiser HD555 is not the best headphone in the market, but it offers great quality considering the entry-level price. The Sennheiser HD555 has a warm and natural sounding audio. The treble is clear without the usual overemphasis, midrange tones are also quite good, but it’s really the bass that kicks ass. A lot of other headphones have a strong bass that tends to be muddled. The Sennheiser HD555 on the other hand has a clear bass sound that does not overwhelm the listener. This makes listening to rock music on the Sennheiser HD555 a good experience and listening to jazz percussion an exceptional one.

3. Forgiving of Poor Quality

The downside of excellent headphones is that they very easily pick up the distortion from poorly produced music. While the Sennheiser HD555 will show up the flaws in your music collection, it is more forgiving in that the music does not become impossibly difficult to listen to.

My only real complaint with the Sennheiser HD555 is that its open design which allows outside in and inside music out. This makes the Sennheiser HD555 less than ideal for use in noisy environments or where people definitely will not appreciate hearing what you are listening to. But as this is typical of headphones with open design, it’s hard to complain about it since this same design of the Sennheiser HD555 is what allows for a spatial extension of the sound, thereby simulating a home theatre listening experience. In any case since the Sennheiser HD555 is too big to inconspicuously hide under even the biggest hairstyles, you probably won’t be using it in public anyway so a noisy environment is not too big an issue.

Bottom line, the Sennheiser HD555 offers great sound quality, excellent fit and comfort for an attractive entry-level price below $200. You will find better headphones than the Sennheiser HD555 for twice the price, but not twice as good so the Sennheiser HD555 is definitely a great buy.
