Why do I only get one channel in my stereo headphones when I plug them into an extension cord?

This means that the headphones are defective or extension wire is? Sometimes, if I move the area in which they are connected, but I find myself doing this all the time. I need new headphones, extension cable, or is there a cheaper solution? Please help!
